Melissa Arnold

I have been wandering through the field of textiles, and related creative fields for well over 40 years.

In 1990 my husband and I moved to Hawaii, while there, I learned Traditional Japanese Shibori techniques and indigo dyeing from Temari, a center for Asian Arts in Honolulu. I also worked at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Culture and Natural History in Honolulu in the field of Art Conservation for 10 years.

I am constantly experimenting with new ideas, chal I am constantly experimenting with new ideas, challenging myself to step outside my “box” and asking “what if”….the first photo is a thoughtful composition with dried black eyed susans on an old calligraphy practice paper….the rest of the photos are a what if question regarding tannins and iron…the first prayer bowls I’ve made all year…it feels like we need prayers more than ever…the hint of fall is in the air here…the rain feels like a huge gift…moving forward with grace…

A few creative journeys I have been taking…most A few creative journeys I have been taking…most recently, The Wild Felted Neckpieces I am compelled to create…a place where I am completely free to explore every whim and desire….wool and silk felted combinations in 1 and 2, …3 and 4…is what happens when you pile wool and silk on top of numerous strands of handspun wool and silk and then add in some calligraphy bones and 5…is how big can you make a Felted Bead?… all three with Chinese Double Connection Knots in between each bead and 6… let’s put it all together in a complete chaos of color, texture, and collage on a body form….

And then I would like to introduce you to my people…”The Vision Keepers”…..7 is “Bone Boy in the Land of Know”…he showed up in November of 2021…8 is “Feather Spirit Through the Portal” she showed up almost immediately after….they are created with my “mended” bones, botanical papers, Red Osier Dogwood sticks, beads and feathers….there are now 9 Vision Keepers…..5 on canvases, and 4 free hanging…. They bring the gift of knowledge and a reminder to keep our visions….authentically…

Some reflection on wisdom (yogi tea) and seeds…b Some reflection on wisdom (yogi tea) and seeds…both seem to be exactly the same thing….metaphors abound…

2. Some fabulous new books by some pretty fabulous people for summer reading

3. A very cool set of “recipe” cards by more fabulous people

4. Steeping weld leaves from last year’s garden (frozen)

A few more visuals of my current mixed media assem A few more visuals of my current mixed media assemblages…hanging on the walls and sitting in window sills in various studios around my home…some still works in progress…

1. SES …Spirit Energy Sticks created in the middle of winter inspired by baby owl feathers a friend gave to me last fall. AKA magic wands

2. Hanging assemblage of silk botanical with a wall amulet and some etched copper jewelry

3. Collaged botanical papers and silk fabrics on a body form with a Felted neckpiece. These are an ongoing project as I have many body forms…

4. An assemblage alter of sorts in a small window with a collage of rusted silks and paper on canvas and stones

5. Another body form collaged with images of my botanical work and my art work printed on Japanese Kozo paper.

A few things that are hanging around in my studios A few things that are hanging around in my studios…I always seem to be wandering down several creative paths at the same time….In February in the middle of “wintering” an old book on Paste Papers caught my eye… and I decided I wanted to try making some when I could get into my dye studio in the summer. I don’t have acrylics so I tried using the old powdered pigments I was given in the early 2000’s. Perfectly Imperfect I’m thrilled to say!

The first photo is just a quick assemblage of some lovely beads overlaid with an indigo dyed rib bone

2. “Look and the Temple will Appear” series #2 “The Heart Temple” 5x7 collage on canvas

3. & 4 paste and pigment on heavy mulberry paper

5. 6. & 7. Paste and pigment on mixed media paper

8. 9. & 10 paste and pigment on Korean Hanji paper.

What an interesting, messy and magical process paste papers are…pleased I can use the supplies I have sitting around. I also did a batch with procion dyes.

Sometimes things just fall together in the most as Sometimes things just fall together in the most astonishing way…almost as if they knew ahead of time who they wanted to be with and how they wanted to be…this sculptural neckpiece was like that some beads I’ve had for 30 years and others for 24 hours while the bones I just completed in February….it felt like they needed to be connected and that their connection completed their energy as a talisman…all my work appears to be that way… there is not much difference between the new collage work on paper and my Shibori /collage work on cloth…it’s all about my attraction to pattern and layering pattern on pattern…working with all the different materials I have loved in a lifetime of creating. Day 131 of my 70th year around the sun. I’m feeling so Blessed…
